Welcome to Year 3!
Our topic for this half term is ‘The Red Rose County’ – please see the topic overview for more specific details about the areas we will be covering. In addition to our daily English lessons, spelling will also be taught three times a week and handwriting will be worked on specifically twice a week. Maths will involve the children working on a range of mathematical skills. The learning of times tables is an important part of this development – any support you can offer at home with this would be greatly appreciated.
English and Maths learning can also be supported through the use of ‘Mathletics’, ‘Prodigy’, ‘TT Rockstars’ and ‘Spelling Shed’ – the children should all be able to use their bookmarks to log in and access these sites confidently at home. Please let us know if you have any problems with this.

*We are always looking for parent / grandparent volunteers to help with reading and classroom jobs, even a couple of hours a week is a huge help, with the promise of tea, coffee and biscuits! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in helping us in class.*
Maths and English Targets
The Year 3 children have maths and English targets (which are at the front of their relevant books). Please ask your child their current targets as they should know them.
English and maths homework will be given on a Friday to be returned by the following Tuesday at the latest please. In addition, we may also give out homework linked to our topic, but this will not be on a weekly basis.
Reading Books / Library Books
Reading books will be changed as and when required if your child is a free reader. Those children who are reading books from the reading scheme will have their books changed twice a week. However, please ensure that your child has their book/diary in school every day as we will endeavour to hear readers as often as we can.
Reading, Writing, Reflection and Design Areas:
We have a dedicated reading area in class. The reading area has a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books. The children will also use the library in school and may take a library book home each week.
There is a writing area for two children to work at for extra work on things such as sentence structure, handwriting and SPAG.
We have also recently added an art and design area for the children to use to sketch, paint and build 3D structures.
There is a reflection area outside the classroom, next to the ICT suite, for the children to use as and when they choose to.
Before and After School
At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8.40 – 8.55), the children will have different maths, reading and writing activities to complete throughout the year. Currently, we are having a push on times tables and so the children will be able to play games and activities to improve their times tables fluency.
At the end of each school day (3.15 pm) the children will wait in the area outside the top of the KS1 corridor (with all of the other KS2 children). The children will wait in this area until they see who is collecting them, and strictly must not leave through the gate until they do so.
The children will be doing PE twice a week (Monday and Thursday). Please ensure that your child has their PE kit (white t-shirt, shorts, plain tracksuit bottoms, pumps and trainers) in school at all times (and all clearly labelled).
The children may also bring in their own water bottles from in from home, but please make sure that they are labelled also.
Mrs Emery will be teaching the class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning; Mrs Macdonald will be teaching the class on a Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Mason will work within the class two mornings a week. Miss Heaton will also continue teaching the children with us throughout this half term. We hope that this year will be an enjoyable year for all the children. Please feel free to come into school if there are any problems or anything which you wish to discuss with us.
