Welcome to Year 6
Also known as...
Welcome to Year 6!
I hope you and your child have had a fantastic holiday and are looking forward to coming back to school.
Year 6 were all brilliant at Tower Wood and hopefully all enjoyed there time on residential. This term will involve a lot of hard work to ensure that the children reach their potential, however there will also be lots of opportunities for interesting and exciting activities both inside and outside of school in the run up to Christmas.
Year 6 in many ways is about getting ready for high school and to help the children get themselves ready each of them will be given a job within school that will be their responsibility. They must ensure that it is completed properly and to a high standard.
English and Maths homework will be given out each week and more information about this will be provided through Class Dojo. There will also be spellings the children are asked to learn each week.
As well as this please could you ensure your child either reads independently or you listen to your child read at least once a week.
Please make sure that full P.E. kit is in school at all times and that all items are named.
To see further information on the subjects and content we will be covering this half term please see the curriculum overview.
I hope that this will be a fantastic half term for all the children. Please feel free to come into school if there are any problems or anything which you wish to discuss with me.
GENERAL Y6 INFORMATION
Staff in Draco Class
Class Teacher: Mr D. Giles
*We are always looking for parent /grandparent volunteers to help with reading and classroom jobs, even a couple of hours a week is a huge help, with the promise of tea, coffee and biscuits! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in helping us in class.*
This year we will be studying the following five topics:
Autumn 1: Made In China
Reading Books / Library Books
Your child will continue to have access to reading books either from the school library or from class. Children should be aiming to read every night if possible as reading is vital to the whole curriculum.
Reading, Writing, Reflection and Design Areas:
We have a dedicated reading area in class with a wide selection of new books.
There is a writing area for two children to work at for extra work on things such as sentence structure, handwriting and SPAG.
We have a reflection area where the children are allowed to spend time reflecting upon anything that has happened in class or at home that week.
We have also recently added an art and design table for the children to use to sketch, paint and build 3D structures.
Before and After School
At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8.40 – 8.55) the children will have different maths, reading and writing activities to complete throughout the year. During our first half term we will have a push on times tables, the children will be able to play games and activities to improve their times tables fluency.
At the end of each school day (3.15 pm) the children will wait until they see who is collecting them, and strictly must not leave through the gate until they are told to do so. If you are happy for your child to walk home on their own please contact the office.
The children will be doing PE twice a week. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit (white t-shirt, shorts, plain tracksuit bottoms, pumps and trainers) in school at all times (and all clearly labelled).
The children may also bring in their own water bottles from in from home, but please make sure that they are labelled also.
I hope that this will be an enjoyable year for all the children. Please feel free to come into school if there are any problems or anything which you wish to discuss with me.
