Welcome to Year 4
Welcome to Year 4!
Hi everyone and welcome ‘back’, albeit we are still working from home during this lockdown period.
I’ve seen so much fantastic home-learning work so far which has included videos, photos, journal entries, interviews, keepy up challenges, treasure hunts… to name a few! I hope this amazing creativity and enthusiasm continues into this new half term (Summer One) because it has been great to see how so many of you have been using your time constructively, to ensure that you are still learning even though we are currently working away from school.
We will hopefully continue with where we left off before the break, I will post maths, reading, writing and topic / science work daily so that it is ready to access by 8.30am every school day. This will be posted as a PDF so that it is completely accessible on all devices and it will be posted on Class Dojo (Phoenix: Class Story). The PDF will also include useful websites, many of which could be accessed daily. The work will follow a similar format to this template below:
I am contactable on Dojo every single school day (within school hours) so please add work to your potfolios, read my comments and send me as many Dojo messages as you wish! As well as using Class Dojo I have also set challenges via video, been part of a Zoom chat and made a handful of phone calls to different children to touch base, and I am happy to do more of this during this new half term too.
Here are a couple of collages that I have put together which show off some of your fantastic Portfolio entries on Class Dojo:
It’s great to see these come through, please keep up the excellent work and remember to use the Dojo link below to contact me for anything during home learning:
Also, please remember to use these apps and websites as often as you'd like:

Summer: Home Learning - work posted to Class Dojo
Maths and English Targets
The Year 4 children have maths and English targets (which are in the back of their relevant books). Please ask your child their current targets as they should know them.
Spelling homework will be given out on a Friday and children must learn the spellings for the following Friday. Homework will also include using TTRockstars, Mathletics, Prodigy and Spelling Shed on a weekly basis.
Reading Books / Library Books
Reading journals will be given out on a Tuesday and a Friday and they should be brought back in on a Monday and a Thursday in order for us to read with the children and change the books.
At school your child will have the opportunity to read to a member of staff at least three times a week (including our guided reading sessions).
The children will also be able to change their library books once a week during our library slot on a Wednesday afternoon. The children may keep their library books for as long as they like but if it is not in class on Wednesday we will not be able to change it.
Reading, Writing, Reflection and Design Areas:
We have a dedicated reading area in class (please see Class Dojo for photos of our classroom). The reading area has a wide selection of new books and comfy 'blue banana' beanbags.
There is a writing area for two children to work at for extra work on things such as sentence structure, handwriting and SPAG.
We have a reflection area where the children are allowed to spend time reflecting upon anything that has happened in class or at home that week.
We have also recently added an art and design table for the children to use to sketch, paint and build 3D structures.
Before and After School
At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8.40 – 8.55) the children will have different maths, reading and writing activities to complete throughout the year. During our first half term we will have a push on times tables, the children will be able to play games and activities to improve their times tables fluency.
At the end of each school day (3.15 pm) the children will wait in the area outside the top of the KS1 corridor (with all of the other KS2 children). The children will wait in this area until they see who is collecting them, and strictly must not leave through the gate until they do so.
The children will be doing PE twice a week. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit (white t-shirt, shorts, plain tracksuit bottoms, pumps and trainers) in school at all times (and all clearly labelled).
The children may also bring in their own water bottles from in from home, but please make sure that they are labelled also.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me, either after school when collecting your child, on Class Dojo or by arranging an appointment with Mrs Lawrenson if it is something you would like to discuss further. Also, my door is always open and I'm always happy to chat.
