French

AIMS: to develop our pupils as emerging linguists, stimulating and fostering a curiosity about language and different cultures and deepening their understanding of the world, so that they can use everyday communication for practical purposes and even perhaps using what they have learned and understood in later life.

Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.

Within French learning, pupils will learn to:

  • use correct pronunciation and grammar;
  • understand basic grammar;
  • memorise words;
  • interpret meaning;
  • ask and answer questions;
  • take part in simple conversations.

French is taught progressively throughout KS2 and, where possible, links with relevant topics are made.  All pupils are taught the lessons applicable to their age/ability, based on the NC programmes of study.  Teaching uses a variety of techniques and resources such as games, mime, role play, action songs.

Pupil progress and attainment in KS2 is judged according to the Lancashire KLIPs statements and children will be assessed by the end of the year, according to whether they are entering, developing or secure within their age group.  Assessment takes place through observation, discussion with pupils and work scrutiny covers:

  • listening and responding;
  • speaking;
  • reading and responding;
  • writing.

French is planned and delivered by the French linguists in school: Mrs Melvin and Mrs Twigg.
